It's actually not a bad job for a low level spell caster because it keeps him away from the front line but still combat effective. The Great Khanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18342783210750664992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384121608336516305.post-24460667059851342612011-11-10T10:11:41.365-05:002011-11-10T10:11:41.365-05:00I treat all weapons the same, including missile we...I treat all weapons the same, including missile weapons.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13457050225967190052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384121608336516305.post-5709366910617794882011-11-10T10:02:43.421-05:002011-11-10T10:02:43.421-05:00The mechanics of level drain being awkward is a go...The mechanics of level drain being awkward is a good point. I guess if you are playing with level drain, you should create a checkpoint copy of each PC at each level. Or maybe just the HP gained from each hit die? Is there anything else that can't be looked up on a table? Or, you could roll the negative hit die, leading to a chance to lose less (or more) HP than the PC gained upon previous level-up. This is also interesting when taken in conjunction with the rule that PCs re-roll their HP at the beginning of each session. In that case, the bookkeeping of level drain is less arduous (I wonder if I could ever get players to try that rule).

I really like the idea of distinguishing fighters by their weapon use, and more than just being able to use more weapons. I think it is probably better to model this as a bonus for fighters rather than a penalty to other classes, to get the fighter players into it. I've been researching all the old blogosphere posts about weapon damage to get ideas about how this might work, and I am leaning towards some version of weapon vs. armor type, but only for fighters.

On ability score generation, I think the die was cast once classes started to have ability score requirements. Was that first in AD&D? People wanted to be able to play paladins (or whatever) so the game mechanics had to have a way to support that, otherwise players would just fudge or keep rolling until they got what they wanted. 4d6 drop the lowest die and arrange to taste is a good compromise, as it keeps some randomness while allowing players to meet class requirements.

Oh, and I forgot the mother of all fault lines: ascending vs. descending AC.Necropraxishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12716340801054739658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384121608336516305.post-90366085435245045762011-11-09T23:52:20.180-05:002011-11-09T23:52:20.180-05:00@Fabian I got RuneQuest: Land of the Samurai some ...@Fabian I got RuneQuest: Land of the Samurai some time ago, I haven't done much more than flip through it though.

@Scottsz I have fought the urge so far to buy into any new SFB universe stuff, but ADB is not making it easy.

@Stuart Not a bad plan there, mine wasn't all that well thought out, just a basic idea really.
