Bows are useful in the outdoors (where they should be) and far less useful indoors (where low ceilings make the ranges short).

I still have players who want to be Legolas from the LotR films, but at least they're smart enough to carry (and use) swords when in the dungeon.
; )JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03263662621289630246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384121608336516305.post-63178276496878709112021-10-31T01:34:55.117-04:002021-10-31T01:34:55.117-04:00Well, for the example of the red dragon there is n...Well, for the example of the red dragon there is no weapons vs AC adjustment. But that's just a nit. IAC I play 1e AD&D and you just have to run it realistically. As you say, a missile weapon at short range is a one-shot and drop it event. How the opponents approach is a factor, and where the other players and allies are is another. I remember running a party where the players were astonished the first time I told them that they might as well drop their missile weapons after that first shot. I dropped those players rather quickly.Baron Greystonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16636292202674906870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384121608336516305.post-44784260717349166182021-07-17T05:41:28.538-04:002021-07-17T05:41:28.538-04:00good.Viking Jewelrygood.Viking Jewelry
alihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11835830755852577356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384121608336516305.post-89690303338149495192021-05-11T15:52:34.576-04:002021-05-11T15:52:34.576-04:00Whoops! Just outfitting their ship cost more than the total amount of treasure to be found on the island. Of course, everyone ended up dying anyway.
; )

RE: Land of the Lost

Watched most (if not all) of it via the YouTube some six (seven?) years ago: still great and some great ideas for a campaign. Can really add some menace to X1. Consider re-skinning all the villages as different stranded castaways from various times/planets, possibly getting along, possibly in a state of warfare (or ceasefire) with each other. OR re-skin them all as primitive pukani (Chaka and his people), rather than having neanderthals/cavemen on the island's interior (those guys can be some sort of outcast tribe and/or cannibals or something). Would definitely re-skin the kopru to be more like the sleestax, and the tribe worshipping them to be castaways from some other time/planet, rather than "degenerated savages"...but that's just me.

RE: Vikings

GusL did some great stuff with Viking-style OD&D, easily converted to B/X; had the chance to play in his on-line game once and it was great. Started PCs off with I think 10,000xp so whatever level that gave their class of choice. Also, like you suggest, gave them their maximum number of henchmen and let them hire a few extra men-at-arms.

I also got them to the Isle via shipwreck, although the captain would be able to repair the ship in time.

The game didn't last that long, the PCs never made it past the Great Wall, but they had fun tracking down rumors and opposing the Zombie Master in one of the villages.
