2024 Retrospective

A pic I thought was cool on FB, just to grab attention.

I didn't do much of anything in 2024. My health took a nose dive this past year, although, looking back, it had been in fairly steady decline since maybe 2019. Autoimmune stuff, runs rampant through my mom's side of the family, and apparently I am not immune (hah!). After literal years of trying to see a specialist, I got in, and have begun treatment for the disease, rather than the symptoms. Some things are getting better, some continue to get worse, but at a slower rate of decline.

Anyway, as a result, I haven't done much this past year. Some SCA stuff as I am more or less obligated to do as Baron. I have run three total D&D games. The best laid plans and all. Two of them were Whitebox, and that didn't go well. I was too tired to be able to really keep control of the table and things went to just the players taking it less and less seriously. I pulled the plug after session 2. The third game was 2nd edition AD&D, because I had a couple of people that were enthusiastic about the system. I realized it was probably too crunchy for most of the rest of the players, but got talked into it anyway. We played a short session after making characters, with a pretty simple combat. I called it right, most of the players who aren't rules people were lost.

I made some plans to start again, with different rules, but they were more or less thwarted by my illness, the holidays, and a never-ending renovation of my kitchen & pantry (with a bit of the bathroom too). One of our contractors is here painting as I write this. They started this work in the beginning of December, and we're still "a week from being done". Some of this is not their fault, they keep finding stuff that needs to be fixed before they can finish the thing they're working on, some of it is the irregular hours and days skipped entirely.

Anyway, I hope to run more D&D this year, and I seem unlikely to die soon.
